Find The Right Grants To Help Pay For School

Colleges and universities are reporting summer enrollment increases as a result of a recent Pell Grant expansion. The expansion, part of an education bill that President Barack Obama signed into law earlier this year, went into effect July 1st.  It came at a time when an MSNBC report noted that people in this recession have been particularly choked with debt and uncertain about the future and a Sallie Mae study noted families have been relying on more money from sources such as grants to help pay for online degrees.

Summer enrollment at the University of Wyoming increased by 5.2 percent over last year, from 5,812 students to 6112, at least in part as a result of the Pell Grant, according to an August news release from the institution. At Middle Tennessee State University, summer enrollment was up 8.31 percent from last summer, with 8,603 students increasing to 9,318, a Daily News Journal article in August noted. Dr. Deb Sells, Enrollment and Academic Services Provost at Middle Tennessee State, attributed the increase to distance learning enrollment as well as summer Pell Grant availability, a news release from the institution noted.

About 617,000 more students than last year were expected to benefit from Pell Grants as of July 1, according to a June US News & World Report article. The average grant, at $3,865 and intended for those with financial needs, was also up from last year’s average – by about $220, the US News & World Report article noted. The federal government in July also was to launch Iraq and Afghanistan Service grants. These particular grants are designed for college students who lost a parent or guardian serving in these countries after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The federal government isn’t alone in expanding its tuition assistance offerings. A new Arkansas lottery helped more than 25,000 students qualify for Academic Challenge Scholarships, where only 8,282 received the scholarships last year, an August Arkansas News Bureau report announced. At the  University of Nebraska-Lincoln, new Chancellor’s Scholarships are providing students with $2,000 more in tuition assistance, according to an August York News Times article.

Private colleges and universities have been joining their public counterparts in upping financial aid offerings. Scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid at private institutions is up 6.8 percent this year, a June report from the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities noted.  In Wisconsin during the 2008-2009 academic year, the average freshman received an $18,478 financial aid package, with 71 percent of that on line degrees package comprised of scholarships and grants that don’t have to be repaid, the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities website suggests.

Families have long relied on grants and scholarships to help pay tuition. In fact, more than half of the average family’s tuition budget comes from their own income and savings (37 percent) and grants and scholarships (23 percent), the Sallie Mae study suggested. During the recession, the study for the 2009-2010 academic year noted, families have also had to work more hours and reduce spending elsewhere in order to pull together tuition costs.

The Pell Grant isn’t the only federal grant program. The government also offers grants known as Teacher Education Assistance, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity and Academic Competitiveness grants. Many states, large corporations, non-profit organizations, community and civic groups offer scholarships and grants as well. Families and students might also consider offsetting college costs with student work study programs as well as tax credits and deductions.

Student eligibility isn’t the only factor in deciding on college grants and other forms of tuition assistance. Colleges, universities and technical schools often have to be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized agency.
