I think lightbox scripts work great for images in a gallery or portfolio where you should isolate an image and not pop up a window that is positioned away from your thumbnail. You should always isolate a piece of artwork in order to ….. But I’ve also seen sites where an enlarged thumbnail feels out of place: it’s difficult to figure out how to close it, or it’s slow, or it’s too in-your-face, or my fingers reflexively hit Ctrl-W/Cmd-W and exit the whole darn page
